The campaign was driven by findings from the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths report, which revealed that the biggest killer of mothers is poor quality of care - accounting for 9 in 10 maternal deaths.
What Women Want began with a simple idea: ask those who most use reproductive and maternal health services to tell us what they most need. Ask the end user.
Alongside pushing for better health policies, programmes and services, the campaign was designed to inspire women and girls to come together and assert their individual needs and wishes - and to challenge advocates, donors, journalists, policymakers and providers to put aside assumptions, expertise and interests and to really listen and act.
